The role family
Forward Deployed roles: the emerging job family
Forward Deployed roles are customer-embedded positions that carry Palantir's forward deployed model into new functions: a specialist who works inside a company's customer accounts, builds and ships real work under their constraints, and routes what they learn there back to the product team.
The pattern started with the forward deployed engineer at Palantir and spread across the AI industry as companies hit the same wall: a capable platform does not deploy itself inside a customer. As generative AI reached creative, design, and architecture functions, the same embedded model reappeared under new titles. This page indexes the whole family, ordered by how established each role is, with a full reference where one exists.
This is an independent reference. It is not affiliated with any company hiring for these roles, and it lists only roles with a verified public listing. Coverage expands as new titles surface; it is not represented as exhaustive.

Role profiles
Each role, in depth
Forward Deployed Engineer Established
The role Palantir coined: a software engineer who works inside a customer organization to build, deploy, and operate custom software end to end in production, owning the outcome rather than handing off a deliverable. It spread across the AI industry as the answer to last-mile deployment and is now the most widely adopted forward deployed title.
Adoption Originated at Palantir; now the most widely adopted forward deployed title across enterprise AI. Hundreds of active listings.

Forward Deployed Product Manager Established
A product manager who embeds with enterprise customers to own deployment outcomes from the product side: driving AI deployments to production, distinguishing where the product is the constraint from where execution is, and feeding durable signal back to the platform team. Distinct from a roadmap PM, a customer success manager, or a solutions engineer. One of the most broadly adopted forward deployed titles after the engineer.
Adoption Widely adopted across enterprise AI and infrastructure companies staffing embedded product ownership. Multiple active listings with published pay bands. Further live listings have since been observed at consulting, CRM-platform, and AI-agent-platform employers, with additional demand appearing behind staffing intermediaries that do not disclose the employer.

Forward Deployed Creative Established
The creative counterpart to the FDE: a senior creative-technical specialist who works with the customers of a generative-AI creative platform to build custom workflows, drive adoption, and surface what those customers actually make back to the product team. Adobe and Comfy title it Forward Deployed Creative Technologist, signaling a heavier engineering bar. A separate performance-marketing meaning also exists at agencies.
Adoption Emerging across generative-AI creative platforms as they staff customer-facing craft roles. Tracked in detail on the FDC reference.
Forward Deployed Designer Emerging
A designer who works from inside customer teams rather than from headquarters. The title appears in two forms: a creative-platform employee role focused on customer education and adoption, and a productized studio-service version delivering brand and product design in fixed engagements. It has the most active discourse layer of any branch outside FDE and FDC, and adjacent design-side titles (Forward Deployed Product Designer, Forward Deployed Staff UX/UI Designer) sit near it under their own names.
Adoption Appears in two forms: a full-time creative-platform role and a fixed-scope studio engagement. Backed by active discourse around the emerging vertical.
Forward Deployed Architect Established
A senior technical architect who works from inside customer accounts to own the end-to-end design and delivery of AI-driven transformation projects, sitting a tier above the FDE and often guiding forward deployed engineers on complex builds. The role blends enterprise architecture, AI solution design, and hands-on implementation.
Adoption Emerging as a senior, architecture-facing forward deployed role at enterprise AI-infrastructure companies.
Forward Deployed AI Engineer Emerging
A forward deployed engineer specialized to generative-AI systems, embedding with customers to build and productionize LLM and agentic applications. The named variant is appearing as companies distinguish general-purpose FDEs from those working specifically on AI deployments.
Adoption Emerging as FDE specialized to generative-AI systems at established software companies.
Forward Deployed Creative Strategist Emerging
Works inside customer teams on creative strategy and performance creative, connecting performance data to creative direction. Sits between the creative branch and the marketing branch, closest to the performance-marketing meaning of FDC.
Adoption Emerging where growth and performance-creative work is embedded with customers.
Forward Deployed Product Designer Emerging
Owns product design for AI deployments from inside the customer account, translating AI capabilities into usable product experiences under real operational constraints. Distinct from the Forward Deployed Designer title, this variant carries a product-design rather than brand-design focus. It now appears in both defense contexts, where it requires US citizenship and clearance, and commercial SaaS, where companies such as Tailor post it to lead product design for customer deployments and feed patterns back into the platform.
Adoption Emerging across both defense and commercial enterprise deployments, with published bands from $130,000 to $170,000 at the commercial end.
Forward Deployed Staff UX/UI Designer Tracked
Designs AI agent experiences (chat and voice) for enterprise deployments, partnering with forward deployed PMs and client teams. Listed under its exact title rather than grouped, as it names a specific senior design function distinct from the product-designer and designer variants.
Adoption Appears as a staff-level embedded design role focused on AI agent experiences for enterprise deployments.
Forward Deployed Marketer Tracked
Runs go-to-market and performance marketing from inside customer accounts, working alongside forward deployed creative designers to optimize AI-generated assets. A single confirmed listing so far, tracked as an early signal.
Adoption Emerging where growth and performance-creative work is embedded with customers.
Engineering Manager, Forward Deployed Tracked
The management tier of the forward deployed engineer, running an embedded engineering team against a platform's own customer accounts. The title surfaces where a forward deployed engineering function has grown past a handful of individual contributors and acquired its own reporting line.
Adoption Appears as the management layer above an existing forward deployed engineer seat at a single confirmed employer.
Forward Deployed Integration Engineer Tracked
A forward deployed engineer scoped to integration work, owning the technical relationship with a platform's largest customers from discovery through live integration and ongoing optimization, covering architecture definition down to code. The named variant appears where a professional-services organization has moved from advising on integrations to building them.
Adoption Appears as an integration-scoped forward deployed engineering seat inside an enterprise professional-services organization.
Applied Research, Forward-Deployed Tracked
A forward deployed engineer working on research infrastructure, embedding with a platform's customers to turn their post-training and agentic reinforcement-learning goals into environments, evaluation harnesses, and deployed training runs. One posting names the variant Forward-Deployed Research Engineer, or FDRE, in its own body copy. The customer-embedded, build-and-operate shape matches the FDE; the research deliverable is what separates it.
Adoption Appears where a post-training platform staffs customer-embedded research engineering. A single confirmed employer, which coins FDRE in its own posting.
Forward Deployed AI Strategy Lead Tracked
Owns strategic customer relationships end to end, translating ambiguous customer problems into scoped technical engagements and carrying them from qualification through deployment and expansion. The closest existing profile is the forward deployed product manager. This variant carries explicit revenue and commercial ownership that the FDPM definition on this site does not currently cover.
Adoption Appears at a post-training infrastructure employer as a customer-owning seat spanning commercial and technical scope.
Forward Deployed AI Scientist Tracked
A client-embedded data scientist who designs, builds, and deploys AI and analytics solutions across consulting engagements, carrying a defined internal level ladder that spans internship through principal. A sibling title, Principal Forward Deployed AI Engineer, exists alongside it. This is consulting-context data science, which does not map onto the engineer, architect, or product profiles above, so it is listed under its own name.
Adoption Appears as a standardized, leveled title across a dozen or more country-specific postings at a single consulting employer.
Forward Deployed Researcher Tracked
An embedded researcher working with a data platform's AI-lab customers on training-data and model quality. It sits alongside two sibling forward deployed titles at the same employer, a data scientist and an engineer. Three concurrent seats under one roof split the function across research, analysis, and build.
Adoption Appears as one of three concurrent forward deployed titles at a single AI-data employer.
One further title sits near the threshold for its own entry without clearing it: Forward Deployed AI Strategist, confirmed at two named employers, with a third listing carried by a staffing intermediary that does not disclose the employer. The two confirmed cases split on placement. One embeds the strategist with the employer's own internal strategy, product, commercial, and technology teams. The other embeds with external enterprise clients, and inverts the word order to AI Forward Deployed Strategist. Both placements are recorded because neither is more representative than the other.
Why this is happening
Why the model is branching by function
The forward deployed model solves a problem every capable platform hits: the product does not adopt itself inside a customer organization. Someone has to embed, build the last mile under the customer's constraints, and own whether it works. That problem is not specific to engineering, so as generative-AI tools spread into creative, design, and architecture functions, the same embedded role reappears with a new functional label. The engineer branch came first and is best documented; the creative and designer branches are developing fastest; architect and the strategy and marketing variants are earlier.
What unifies them is the operating model, not the medium: customer-embedded, end-to-end ownership, and a loop that returns field reality to the product team. What differs is the function each one deploys into. That is why they read as one family rather than unrelated jobs sharing a prefix. The lineage traces back further than the FDE itself, to Palantir's Deployment Strategist, the customer-embedded problem-solver role that the engineering title formalized.
Every role above names a person. Three branches also have practice-level references, covering how the work is staffed, structured, and scaled as a team function rather than an individual job: forward deployed engineering, forward deployed architecture, and a team of forward deployed creatives.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- What are forward deployed roles?
- Customer-embedded positions that apply Palantir's forward deployed model to different functions. A specialist embeds with a company's customers, builds and ships real work under their constraints, and carries field insight back into the product. The engineer, creative, and designer versions are the most developed.
- What forward deployed job titles exist?
- The established ones are Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), the software-specific Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE), Forward Deployed Creative (FDC, also Forward Deployed Creative Technologist or FDCT), Forward Deployed Designer (FDD), and Forward Deployed Architect (FDA). Emerging variants with public listings include Forward Deployed AI Engineer, Creative Strategist, Product Designer, and Marketer.
- What do all forward deployed roles have in common?
- The operating model: customer-embedded, end-to-end ownership of the outcome, and a working loop between the field and the roadmap. They differ by the function they deploy into, engineering, creative, design, architecture, strategy, or marketing.
- Which forward deployed role came first?
- The Forward Deployed Engineer, coined at Palantir in its early years, itself formalized from Palantir's earlier Deployment Strategist role. The other titles are functional branches that appeared as the model spread across the AI industry.
- Which forward deployed role pays the most?
- The engineer and architect branches publish the widest bands and the highest ceilings, both topping out near $390,000 in base salary. NVIDIA lists $200,000 to $391,000 for the Forward Deployed Architect. OpenAI's forward deployed engineering postings reach $385,000, and Anthropic lists $200,000 to $300,000 for its forward deployed engineer. Creative-branch roles publish lower base ranges so far. Every figure here is base salary; equity sits on top and varies widely.
Methodology
How this index is compiled
Roles are listed only where public listings have been verified. This index tracks adoption at the tier level rather than naming individual employers; established roles link to their full reference on this site, while emerging and tracked roles are profiled here until their definition settles enough to warrant a dedicated page. Adoption tiers reflect how many companies have been observed using each title. Nothing is listed speculatively, and figures are shown only where the source discloses them.
