FDSE: What Is a Forward Deployed Software Engineer?
A forward deployed software engineer (FDSE) is a software engineer employed by a platform company who embeds with its customers to build, deploy, and operate custom production software on the platform, inside the customer's own environment. It is the software-specific form of the forward deployed engineer: Palantir's original long form of the title, and at OpenAI a separately posted role in its own right.
The four-word title carries the role family's full history, and versions of it now appear beyond the platform companies themselves, including at consulting firms staffing deployments on those platforms. One role or two: FDSE against FDE
The answer is company-specific. At Palantir, FDSE and FDE name the same role. The company shortened its original Forward Deployed Software Engineer title to Forward Deployed Engineer as the industry adopted it, and its own listings still move between the two forms freely: postings titled FDSE open with body copy about "the Forward Deployed Engineer." At OpenAI, the two titles are two different jobs, posted separately and simultaneously on the same Forward Deployed Engineering team.
